I’ve always felt that being a producer is similar to being an offensive lineman in football. While a vital member of the team, viewers rarely think about what the producer is doing. And if someone at home is talking about the producer, something has probably gone terribly wrong. It’s not a role that everyone would like, but I love it.
During my time in Seattle, I’ve had the opportunity to cover a WNBA Championship, an MLS Cup, a Rose Bowl bound Huskies squad, and of course the consistently mediocre Mariners. I was humbled to be nominated for a 2020 Northwest Emmy earlier this year for our 2019 MLS Cup pregame show. Through all the great broadcasts I’ve been a part of, that pregame show will always hold a special place in my heart. On top of the Emmy nomination, that show represented one of the things that makes sports special. It was amazing to watch the passion that the city of Seattle had for the Sounders as fans filled Centrylink Field for the game.
Through my years working in Eugene and Seattle, I’ve learned that photography and storytelling transcend market size. Whether it’s a kid from Eugene who grew up to play on a local semi-pro soccer team or brothers starting for the same D1 football team, everyone has a unique story; you just have to find it.
